We all love an affordable option for makeup – especially if it works! If you are in the market for a new foundation, this could be your new holy grail, ride or die, desert island foundation. The new Maybelline Superstay 24 hour foundation boasts to be a full coverage foundation, yet lightweight, oil-free and doesn’t clog pores. It has a “glide-on” easy application -the biggest claim however; 24 hour long wear! Sign me up.
Firstly I definitely don’t wear makeup for that long, nor do I know anyone who wears makeup for 24 hours (sleeping in makeup is a BIG no-no!). For my dry/combination skin I was skeptical as matte foundations usually cling to my areas and exaggerate my fine lines. I am a fan of the Maybelline FITme! Matte and Powerless foundation however so I thought I would give it a try.
I applied the foundation with a beauty blender and I absolutely love the finish. It’s not too matte where it looks cakey – and it didn’t affect my problem areas. I would say it’s more hydrating then the FITme! Matte and Poreless. I used the Laura Mercier translucent powder to set it – not that it needs it however since this is how I do my makeup everyday, I thought it would be more of a fair shot.
After about 5-10 minutes I noticed that the foundation started to oxidise. It went more of a darker orange colour and that is quite common with matte foundations (think paint drying on walls – it dries darker) as the drying down is what improves the longevity of a foundation, so I would recommend going a shade lighter – when shade matching, apply the shade onto your wrist or neck and walk around the shop/wait for it to dry to make sure you get the right one for you.
I tend to get oily on my t-zone throughout the day and even though I used a silicone based primer (Maybelline Babyskin) I could see my oils seeping through after about 6 hours of wear. After 8 hours, the foundation completely disappeared on my nose (without touching), so depending on your skin-type, I don’t think this foundation really would last 24 hours – especially if you have oily skin. It also started to look a bit cakey around my cheeks.
Although the 24 hour claim isn’t something I actually tested, considering the results on me, I don’t think it would last on me any longer than 8 hours.Regardless, I would still recommend this foundation – its affordable and it really is beautiful. There are a few downfalls – the oxidation and the shade range is also pretty limited. Considering Maybelline is a big drugstore brand, you would think they would have more shades to offer.
You can pick up the Maybelline Superstay 24 hour foundation for £9.99 at Superdrug or Boots.
