Ichi! Ni! San! Freak Scene – Soho
“Ichi! Ni! San! Sake Sake Bomb!” And with every encouragement from Freak Scene’s spectacular staff the bar was duly thumped until the sweet shot of Sake, feverishly balanced on two chopsticks, ka-plunked into the awaiting pool of beer. In a restaurant overflowing with hungry diners, and with all the energy of surrounding Soho, our sake bombs were downed in one, much to the entertainment of our fellow diners and applause from the staff.
Here the kitchen is your entertainment with bar style dining that faces an open plan kitchen. This brings diners close to the action, bestowing the opportunity to engage Freak Scene staff who are well equipped to explain the exciting set of medium to small plates that emerge.
We’re big fans of Scott Hallsworth’s new Frith Street haunt, which delivers on the unique flavours of Japan and South East Asia. Biting into the Pork Sausage Buns, still smoking from the robata grill, took us straight back to the lemongrass infused BBQ flavours we marvelled at while on travels in Indonesia. Other favourite plates include the fresh Sashimi Pizza served with Truffle Ponzu and Wasabi Tobiko and the Beef Fillet Tataki accompanied with Onion Ponzu and Garlic Crisps – super fresh flavours, quality ingredients and perfectly accompanied with a ZEN Pale Ale.
With retro poster clad interiors, a comprehensive cocktail and shot menu and the right balance of party vibe to dinner setting, Freak Scene has been an instant hit. And with seating to extend outside in the summer months, this eye catching spot will no doubt keep pulling in the crowds.
